IT’S WHO WE ARE by Danny Couch
Peter had a way of rallying the troops, motivating the masses, and reminding the church of who they were and what God called them to do. In his letter, Peter encouraged his people to live out their faith as if it was the most important part of their being; not to take God for granted, but remember what God had done for them and respond with their best effort:
Once you were not a people,
but now you are God’s People;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy.
Sometimes we forget that God chose us, selected us, called out to us and not the other way around. We simply have been given the choice to respond to God. And if we choose to respond, it is not on our terms as to how we respond. Again, it is on God’s terms. God claims us to be light in the darkness, salt of the earth, to add God’s uniqueness in a world of people seeking meaning and direction.
Peter reminds us that the church serves a purpose; we have a mission that cannot and will not be altered. We “are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that we (you) may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
Our mission this New Year is to reclaim our significance as God’s Chosen People, to remember our purpose and be the empowered ministers to the community, which God calls us to serve.
Let’s start the New Year right!
