You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. —Matthew 5:13–16
From the time we are small children, we all have been asked the question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As children we think we might become something like an astronaut, or a doctor, things that sound fun. Then somewhere along the line, the question gets changed from “what are you going to be” to “what are you going to do?” They want to know we are going to be able to “make a living.” So, we go to school for 12 – 18 years, get some skills, then we get out there and start hustling. But then, after a few months, or even years, we begin to suspect we never got around to answering that first, most important question. “Who am I?”
God has a lot to say about who we are, and in case you haven’t noticed, God is always up to something. God has a plan for creation – the Kingdom of God – and God is always trying to help us understand that we are a big of part of that plan. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus was teaching his disciples that they were much more than fishermen – they were residents of the now-but-not-yet kingdom of God. He gave his life to show them – and all of us – who we were created to be.
The school bell is ringing, calling you to the most important class you will ever attend, because this is the class where the Master Teacher is going to teach you about the now-but-not-yet Kingdom of God. And if you pay close attention, you just might find the answer to your most important question: “Who am I?”
So, sharpen your #2 pencil, grab your Big Chief pad, and take your seat. We’re going back to school! Worship this Sunday at 8:30 or 11:00 as we report for class!
