Both Sides of the Page… An Easter Sketch by John Paul Carter
Several years ago, Carole and I went to the Kimble Art Museum in Fort Worth to see a display of sketches by Michelangelo. On loan from England's Windsor Castle, the drawings clearly illustrated the famous artist's fascination with human anatomy. Indeed, much of his genius lay in his remarkable ability to depict how muscle and bone work together to form the miracle of the human body.
Paper was a very scarce commodity in sixteenth century Rome, so artists frequently used both sides of the page for their sketches - even the famous painter of the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo.
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. This is an opportunity for us to focus on Jesus and to follow his path to the cross, the grave, and prepare for the glory of his resurrection.
Too often, however, we become preoccupied with doubt, fear, envy, or shame. It binds us in a prison of self-centeredness that prevents us from being the people God wants us to be.
This week, reflect on these words by Henri Nouwen as you strive to shift your life's focus away from self and from pleasing others and move toward a more intimate relationship with God.
Growing into Our True Freedom Henri J. M. Nouwen
True freedom is the freedom of the children of God. To reach that freedom requires a lifelong discipline since so much in our world militates against it. The political, economic, social, and even religious powers surrounding us all want to keep us in bondage so that we will obey their commands and be dependent upon their rewards.
But the spiritual truth that leads to freedom is the truth that we belong not the world but to God, whose beloved children we are. By living lives in which we keep returning to that truth in word and deed, we will gradually grow into our true freedom.

Our trip to Ecuador this year will take place in mid-June. The schedule is full and filled with adventure. The Education Building we started two summers ago will be completed and dedicated before the town of Pusir Grande and the school officials!
In addition to completely the Education Building that will house computer classes and offices, we will continue the work on the church, visit homes, projects with the school aged children and youth, explore, learn and build more relationships. After four days in the valley, we will visit one of the most beautiful place in Ecuador; the town of Banos and her many waterfalls.
If you feel led to go, we can work out the details! The bottom line is this: If God says, “GO!” Well, we better get you there! There are 25 slots for the trip and 16 are taken.
