The Beatitudes

The Beatitudes

The eight beatitudes found in the beginning of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in the 5,6 & 7 chapters of Matthew represent a process that listeners (Christians) must go through in order to become useful disciples for Jesus. The beatitudes are a process of transformation or changing one’s allegiance from our family, work, possessions, friends to God. The result of this transformation is having HEALTHY and functional relationships with other people and the things of this world.

Living as transformed people is how we receive our blessings from God. “Blessings” are NOT the abundance of things we have, but the way we humble ourselves before God and allow ourselves to be used as God desires. Jesus sums up the Beatitudes in the next chapter of this same sermon.

“Seek first the Kingdom of God and God’s righteousness, and all these other things will be given to you as well”   - Matthew 6:33

The problem with Christianity in America today is that we want the blessing without the process of transformation; the reward before practice even begins. We want to be viewed as Christians without committing to the Christian way of life. The result is Spiritual Welfare or creating a person and Church that may know of Christ but does not know Christ.
